In the great days of Hollywood, the seven large studios were known as the 'big five' (MGM, RKO, Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox) and the 'little two' (Columbia and Universal). They ran like factories, with complexes filled with sets and craftsmen as well as writers, directors and actors, all under long-term contracts and employed year-round.
