The new novel from the award-winning author of Mrs. Kimble and Baker Towers, The Condition tells the story of the McKotches, a proper New England family that comes apart during one fateful summer, when their daughter Gwen is diagnosed with Turner’s syndrome, a genetic condition that prevents her from maturing, trapping her forever in the body of a child. Twenty years later, all five family members are still dealing with the fallout. Each believes himself crippled by some secret pathology; each feels responsible for the family’s demise. And Gwen is silent and emotionally aloof, a bright, accomplished woman who makes peace with the hermetic life she’s constructed until, well into her thirties, she falls in love for the first time. And suddenly, once again, the family’s world is tilted on its axis.
Elizabeth Frengel writes about good reads—from classics on the brink of obscurity to contemporary kids’ books. She’s especially interested in between-the-wars European lit and is an unabashed Anglophile and connoisseur of the British mystery. In addition to having served her time at Olsson’s at the Lansburgh location and in the office, Elizabeth taught writing at American University. She will soon step into the role of manager of reader services at The Society of the Cincinnati. Read More...

Malaika used to pass poems to fellow English majors at Spelman College. Now the Cincinnati native reads poetry to pigeons on her Capitol Hill fire escape. Malaika has worked at National Public Radio and co-edited a literary magazine in Florence, Italy. Read More...
From 1991 until 2005, Cate Hagman worked at Olsson's Bethesda store and focused particularly on classical music, in which she betrayed a decided weakness for early music ensembles, mezzos, and baritones. Since 1995 she has been a political transcriber for a local independent newswire. Read More...
Ama Wertz has street cred. She is a self-proclaimed: snob, Germanophile, spinster, and cyclist. She's worked in radio on two continents. She knows more than ten people in Montana. She likes: crafting, good acoustics, attractive typeface, pomegranates, and bulleted lists. She dislikes: musicals, sneers, classic rock, and bios written in third person. Her favorite band is SSLYBY. She does not subscribe to any magazines. Read More...
